President’s Message

“Gardening adds Years to your Life and Life to your Years”

Dear Garden Club Members:

I am smiling as I write this, my first message to you. Why? I am remembering the reason, over ten years ago, I joined the Hickory Hill Garden Club. New to Charleston and Hickory Hills, I wanted to meet my neighbors. I had a minimal interest in gardening, I confess. You wouldn’t think this as I had parents that not only had a green thumb, but all eight fingers were green as well.

Well, much to my delight, in joining the club I was awarded with much more than I expected. It was great comradery, friendship and education. Hickory Hill Garden Club is a group of dedicated members that stand out in our neighborhood. Individuals who continue to give back to Hickory Hill in countless ways. It is this group that provides many gifts and services: beautification of the neighborhood, children’s Halloween costume contest, Easter egg hunt, an amazing children’s playground, and last, but not least, the incredible annual barbeque dinner which funds our many projects.

The monthly education provided is outstanding: monthly horticulture tips; lectures and workshops on everything from landscaping, flower arranging, butterflies and more.

In closing, for those “seasoned members” I am preaching to the choir. Thank you for your many years of service. To the newest members, see the opportunity, fun and education on the way. Bring a new neighbor to a meeting and remember our motto from last year; “The more you know, the more you grow”.

I am following in some very big steps and hope I can fulfil your expectations as president.

Warmly,
Maryellen Shipp
President
